The Conference will be held on December 4 & 5, 2018 in Ottawa. At the conference we will review and seek input on a proposed national strategy to improve the level of employment of persons with disabilities in Canada. The Canadian Association for Research on Work and Health (CARWH) is holding its upcoming conference in Vancouver from October 21-23: CARWH 2018: Research and Practice to Improve Health in a Changing World of Work. CRWDP started a Student/New Researcher Webinar Series in May 2018. The 5th in this series was held on October 4th. Our panelist Dr. Alexis Buettgen shared her research findings on an Institutional Analysis of Work in the Non-profit Sector from the standpoint of people with disabilities. The next webinar will be on November 13th. Julia Goyal will speak about her research on Home, work and health in the Airbnb system. The CRWDP Ontario Cluster meeting will be held on November 9, 2018 at the Friends House. The focus of this meeting will be CRWDP Ontario Cluster Policy Pods. The Disability Inclusion Group of Memorial University (DIG-MUN for short) will be holding a meeting on Tuesday, October 30th, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The mandate of this group is to: 1) encourage dialogue around issues relating to disability inclusion at Memorial University for faculty, staff, and students; 2) identify opportunities to improve disability inclusion policies and practices at Memorial University; and 3) work toward the development of a Disability Studies curriculum for Memorial students in order to enhance inclusion capacity among future employers and employees in NL. The primary purpose of this meeting will be to develop a plan of action for moving forward toward the accomplishment of these goals. VI. On November 29th, The Bancroft Institute is pleased to present a morning session with Dr Ellen MacEachen, to discuss her new edited collection "The Science and Politics of Work Disability Prevention. "The event, which will take place at Friends House in Toronto, will also include presentations from other academics, advocates, and injured workers with lived experience of the issues. The report A Clear Business Case for Hiring Aspiring Workers, authored by CRWDP members Rebecca Gewurtz, Emile Tompa, Bonnie Kirsh, and Margaret Oldfield, among others, was profiled by the Globe and Mail with relation to the Employee Recommended Workplace Award created by the Globe and Mail and Monreau Shepell. This is a great opportunity for students to learn new skills, learn from senior researchers and/or develop their CVs. We will have podcasts available on our CRWDP site in the next couple of months – stay tuned! II. The second Roundtable on Inclusion was held on April 17th, 2018, in St. John’s, NL. It was organized by CRWDP NL Cluster members in SafetyNet, in collaboration with COD-NL, Empower, and the NL Federation of Labour. Over the past year, Memorial University’s Employment Equity and Diversity Advisory Committee (EEDAC) has been guiding the development of a new three-year Employment Equity and Diversity Plan for the university. As a part of this process, they held open consultations with stakeholders both internal and external to the university in order to gain better insight into how Memorial might attract and retain more diverse employees, including those with disabilities. The plan will be submitted to the Memorial Vice-Presidents Council for approval this fall. Once it is approved, EEDAC will review annual status reports with respect to progress of the Employment Equity and Diversity Plan and provide appropriate advice. II. Dr. Tompa, Co-Director of the CRWDP, is a member of the Labour Market Information Council’s National Stakeholder Advisory Panel (NSAP). The LMIC is working to improve the timeliness, reliability and accessibility of labour market information to Canadians and the NSAP provides advice on the overall activities of the LMIC, including identifying specific priorities on an annual basis. The Institute’s annual Alf Nachemson Memorial Lecture is taking place Wednesday, November 28 at the Design Exchange in downtown Toronto. This year’s lecture features Dr. Paul Demers, director of the Occupational Cancer Research Centre. Demers will describe the process by which important international agencies establish a scientific consensus on disease causation arising from occupational exposures and the challenges of estimating the burden of occupational disease. He will also highlight past successes in occupational disease prevention in Canada and outline his perspective on opportunities to move the occupational disease prevention agenda in Canada forward in the decade ahead.
