Research Activities

Professor Neis' past research focused broadly on developing research partnerships to explore interactions between work, environment, health and communities in rural and remote contexts. She has researched many aspects of the Newfoundland and Labrador fisheries, including: gender and fisheries; occupational asthma to snow crab and fishing vessel safety; the environmental, social and human health impacts of restructuring in fisheries; local ecological knowledge and science, and opportunities and challenges for rebuilding collapsed fisheries and threatened communities.

Four years ago, Professor Neis began shifting her focus towards the study of employment-related geographical mobility and its impacts on workers and their families, employers and home and host communities. She is currently the Project Director for the 7-year On the Move Partnership grant funded by SSHRC, the Newfoundland and Labrador Research Development Corporation, Canada Foundation for Innovation Leaders Opportunity Fund, and Memorial University and numerous partner organizations.
