Areas of expertise

She has been a member of the Québec Bar since 1978. Her research focuses on legal issues relating to occupational health and safety and workers' compensation and is the author of numerous publications in the field. Her research interests include the following themes: Work and mental health; health effects of compensation systems; policy, precarious employment and occupational health; interactions between law, science and medicine in the field of occupational health and safety; disability prevention and compensation systems; women's occupational health; regulatory issues in occupational health and safety. / Chercheure spécialisée sur des questions relatives à la santé et la sécurité du travail, elle est l'auteure de nombreuses publications scientifiques et de communications présentées lors de rencontres nationales et internationales et de plusieurs livres sur le droit de la santé et la sécurité du travail.

Research Activities

Professor Lippel has held the Canada research Chair in Occupational Health and Safety Law since 2006, and has lead many multidisciplinary research teams focussing on various issues related to workers’ compensation and occupational health and safety. She lead a study on the effects of compensation systems on workers’ health, funded by SSHRC, and recently completed a research programme funded by the Global Health Research Initiative on Psychosocial Hazards in the Workplace, a study that looked at men’s and women’s working conditions in Chile and that provided an a comparative analysis of regulatory protections for workers’ mental health in over thirty jurisdictions. She currently co-leads with Dr. Joan Eakin a SSHRC funded project on the role of doctors in workers’ compensation systems in Québec and Ontario. Since its inception in 2002, she has been a mentor in the CIHR funded training program on Work Disability Prevention lead by Dr. Patrick Loisel, and she provides training on issues specific to compensation systems and their effects on return to work. She has received various awards for her research, including an award from the Fondation du Barreau du Québec for the best Law book published in Québec in 1991-1992, for her book

In 2005, she received the Award for Academic excellence of the Canadian Association of Law Teachers[KL1] . In 2011 she received the award for excellence in research from the University of Ottawa. She has been a member of the Royal Society of Canada since 2010.
